Update on the social work licensing compact

The social work compact reached a milestone in February 2022 as the Technical Assistance Group completed its advisory work.

After the compact kickoff meeting in May 2021, the Council of State Governments and the Association of Social Work Boards developed and convened the Technical Assistance Group. The group included state legislators, members and administrators of state social work boards, licensees, educators, attorneys, and other stakeholders.

The group met regularly and reviewed state licensure policies, proposed solutions to regulatory issues, and made recommendations for the provisions of the compact. The recommendations include the licensure requirements states must maintain to join the compact and the requirements for licensees to participate.

The project now moves to the drafting phase. The document team is responsible for reviewing the policy recommendations from the Technical Assistance Group and drafting those into model compact legislation. CSG staff expect to convene the document drafting team in April 2022, with the goal of having the model legislation available for stakeholder review this summer.
