Examination preapproval for the Maine State Board of Social Worker Licensure
Apply for preapproval through ASWB to get a social work license in Maine that requires taking one of the social work licensing examinations.
In order to sit for the social work licensing exams for Maine, you must complete the online application here, and submit the supporting documentation required.
Application fee: US$60 (nonrefundable)
Approval to take the exam is valid for one year.

Overview of licensing requirements
Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
- An official transcript showing a baccalaureate degree in social work or social welfare from a CSWE/CASWE accredited program (or dean’s letter if in the last semester)
The transcript or dean’s letter must be sent electronically from the school to maine@aswb.org.
- Passing of the Bachelor’s Examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards
Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
- An official transcript showing a master’s degree in social work or social welfare from a CSWE/CASWE accredited program (or dean’s letter if in the last semester)
The transcript or dean’s letter must be sent electronically from the school to maine@aswb.org.
- Passing of the Master’s Examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards
Licensed Master Social Worker, Clinical Conditional (LMSW-CC)
- An official transcript showing a master’s degree in social work or social welfare from a CSWE/CASWE accredited program (or dean’s letter if in the last semester)
The transcript or dean’s letter must be sent electronically from the school to maine@aswb.org.
- Passing of the Master’s Examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
- An official transcript showing a master’s degree in social work or social welfare from a CSWE/CASWE accredited program
